If you back up your iPad with iTunes, and back up your computer with Time Machine, then the iPad backups are backed up with Time Machine.

- After you select a backup disk, Time Machine immediately begins making periodic backups — automatically and without further action by you. The first backup may take a long time, depending on how many files you have, but you can continue using your Mac while a backup is underway. Time Machine only backs up the files that changed since the previous backup, so future backups will be faster.
Technically the backups are in stored within the iTunes folders, but if you back up your computer, Time Machine will back up those files as well.
Select the first one, which reads From a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk and click Continue. In the next screen choose the drive that holds your backup and then click Continue.
There is no way to ONLY back up your iPad with Time Machine. Not sure if that is what you are asking about or not. Time Machine is designed to back up your entire computer, not specific iOS devices. iTunes is designed to back those up.
